How to Renew Your Driver's License Online via LTMS
Renew your Philippine driver's license online: eligibility, medical certificate, online validation exam, payment, and delivery or pickup.
Renewing your driver's license used to mean a full day at the LTO — queues, fixers, and paperwork. Through the LTMS Portal, eligible drivers can now do most of it online. Here's how the process works and who qualifies.
Who can renew online?
The portal determines your eligibility during the application, but in general, fully online renewal is for drivers with a clean or manageable record renewing an existing license — not first-time applicants. If your license has been expired for a long time or you have serious violations on record, the system may route you to a branch instead. Student permit holders can't renew into a full license online; that requires the practical exams in person.
What you'll need
- Your LTMS account (registered and email-verified) — see our registration guide if you don't have one
- Your current driver's license details
- A medical certificate from an LTO-accredited clinic (required before the portal lets you proceed)
- A payment method for the renewal fees
Step-by-step online renewal
1. Log in to portal.lto.gov.ph
Sign in with your registered email and password. If you're locked out, our login and password recovery guide has you covered.
2. Open the license renewal section
From your dashboard, go to licensing and select driver's license renewal. The portal pulls up your existing record — confirm your details are correct before continuing.
3. Take the online validation exam
Renewing drivers must pass the LTO's online validation exam. It's a set of questions on traffic rules, road signs, and safe driving. Study the LTO's driver materials beforehand — failing means retaking it, which slows everything down.
4. Upload your medical certificate
The medical must come from an LTO-accredited clinic; the clinic usually transmits it electronically, and the portal matches it to your application. Get the medical done before you start the online application to avoid getting stuck mid-process.
5. Pay the renewal fees
Settle the fees through the portal's online payment. Keep the payment confirmation — screenshot it as backup.
6. Choose delivery or pickup
Depending on current LTO processing, you can have the new license card delivered or pick it up at your chosen branch. Delivery takes longer but saves you the trip.
How long does it take?
The online application itself takes under an hour if your documents are ready. Card printing and delivery add days to weeks depending on LTO backlog — apply well before your license expires, not the week it does.
Common renewal problems
- Medical not found in the system — the clinic hasn't transmitted it yet, or it was done at a non-accredited clinic. Confirm with the clinic.
- Failed the validation exam — review the materials and retake it; there's no shortcut.
- Record mismatch — your application details must match LTO records exactly, down to name spelling.
